Decorating a Room with Dark Walls?  Here's How!

Paint has transformative powers. It can warm or cool a space, create a room full of light or a dreamy cozy space. With deep blues or inky blacks and even gorgeous greens, a few coats of paint can take a room from unremarkable to magical. However, how you approach decorating a dark-walled room is special.

We want to avoid a room that feels gloomy or like a cave which means we will be paying attention to balance and style to create a well-balanced, elegant, and dramatic room.

Furniture: To complement and offset the richness of dark walls, choose furniture pieces in lighter shades. Be careful of stark whites as it may create a space that feels too beachy, unless that is what you are going for. If you are going for a more sophisticated look, use warmer tones and light wood or caramel-colored leather.

Texture: Layers and texture will add depth and dimension to the space. Soften the room with cozy throws, textured artwork, and experiment with various materials like fur or velvet. The goal is to add depth and texture throughout the space.

Lighting: Proper lighting is crucial when working with dark walls. Incorporate a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to brighten up the room and highlight key features. Consider installing ceiling lights, wall sconces, and floor or table lamps strategically to create layers of light. This will help balance the darkness of the walls and create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Metals: Incorporating metallic accents can add a touch of glamour and sophistication to a room with dark walls. Consider using gold, silver, or copper elements in the form of lamps, picture frames, decorative objects, or even metallic textiles like curtains or cushions. These accents will catch the light and create a captivating interplay with the dark walls. An expert piece of advice is to choose brushed metal finishes rather than polished.

Art and Decor Focal Points:  Dark walls provide an excellent backdrop for showcasing artwork and statement decor pieces. Hang vibrant paintings, photographs, or intricate wall hangings to create focal points that draw the eye. Use contrasting colors and bold patterns to make these pieces stand out and bring a dynamic energy to the room.

Decorating with dark walls is a chance to create a stylish, dramatic, sophisticated room. Use these tips to create your dreamy space that invites you to stay a while.
